The Parent School Support Committee focuses on the
educational priorities facing its school, while the administrators take
care of the day-to-day operation of the school. PSSC's advise
principals on quality of education issues, such as school improvement
plans and students achievements. In an expansion of their duties,
together with the district superintendent, PSSC's
now have input into the hiring of vice-principals
as well as the principal, and are involved in the performance
evaluations of both.
The PSSC will be expected to focus on an advisory
and school improvement role, which will include:
- Working with the school principal to develop,
and monitor a school improvement plan;
- Reviewing the results of the school
performance report;
- Advising the principal in the development of
school policies; and
- Communicating with the DEC on matters relating
to the PSSC mandate.
A Parent School Support Committee (PSSC) is a
committee of between six and twelve members who are elected to ensure
that the voice of parents is heard.
The majority of members are parents of students
enrolled in the school, elected for a three-year term. PSSC's can
choose to appoint one or two community members. In schools with Home
and School Associations, one Home and School representative will be
appointed to serve on the PSSC. High schools will have one student
member, chosen by the student body. PSSC's in middle and elementary
schools can choose to appoint a student member. Each PSSC has a teacher
member, elected by other teachers. Principals participate in all PSSC
meetings.
Parents of students in the school elect PSSC
members at an open meeting organized by the school principal during the
month of September.
To run for a PSSC, you must be a parent of a
student enrolled in the school. To serve as a community member, you
must be nominated by a parent.
Department of Education and school system
employees are now able to run. School-based employees are also
eligible, except in the school where they work.
Since the three-year terms of PSSC's are
staggered, elections are usually held every September to elect members
to open seats. The school principal is responsible for organizing the
first meeting and making parents aware of the election..
